Salzau was first referred to as a knightly domain in the 13th century and then later rebuilt into a Baroque castle in the 18th century. The castle was then completely rebuilt in neoclassical style by count Otto Blome in 1882 after a fire had occurred. Some of the main concerts of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival take place in the Konzertscheune, with room for up to 700 guests. The visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy refreshments in the festival café before and after the performances. From 1987 to 2010 Schloss Salzau was the seat of the Orchestral Academy of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.
