Laeiszhalle
Hamburg
The Laeiszhalle was built at the beginning of the 20th century by the architects Martin Haller and Emil Meerwein on what is today Johannes-Brahms-Platz, between the historical center of Hamburg and the park grounds Planten un Blomen (Plants and Flowers). Because of its accommodations and modern features, it was considered the most modern concert hall in Germany after its completion. In 2005 the concert hall, known previously as the »Musikhalle Hamburg«, was renamed to its current “Laeiszhalle”, a name that honors the famous Hamburg ship-owner Carl Heinrich Laeisz, who willed a generous sum for the construction of a “proper place for the practice and enjoyment of noble and serious music.” Stars such as Oscar Peterson and Jessye Norman, as well as such renowned orchestras as the Philadelphia Orchestra have performed here for the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. The Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra performs here on a regular basis as well.
