The Nikolaikirche of Plön (church) is located in the center of the city market place and is a neo-Romanesque hall church with barrel vault. Between 1866 and 1888 the church was rebuilt upon the 12th century foundation after lightning had destroyed it in 1864. The present-day windows of the church were incorporated during renovation between 1961 and 1965. The rearrangement of the interior was the carried out in 1986. The Nikolaikirche offers its large altar room and organ gallery to create ideal possibilities for the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, such as chamber music and a-cappella concerts.
