 Gottorf Castle, idyllically located on an island, is the largest secular building in Schleswig-Holstein from the renaissance and baroque periods. The castle forms an irregular, four-winged construction, surrounding an interior court, which is enclosed by three sides of the former renaissance fortification. The courtyard façade of the west wing is the most elaborately adorned area of the castle, standing in contrast to the white elutriated walls of the remaining façade. Gottorf Castle is home to the Schleswig-Holstein state museum with a rich collection of art and archeology. The riding hall of the castle serves the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival as a venue with an extraordinary atmosphere.
