Cismar Monastery was founded in 1238 by Count Adolf IV. von Holstein for the monks and nuns of the Lübeck Benedictine Monastery. Up until the closing of the convent in 1561, it developed a reputation as a stronghold of artistic, humanistic, and economic achievements of the highest degree. In the middle of the 16th century the monastery grounds were used as a common estate, ultimately becoming the property of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Today, the manor-house of the monastery serves as a branch of the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum, where one can view the most valued preservation of the monastery’s treasures, the altar shrine from 1300. Today the evangelical community once again holds church service in the sanctuary of the former monastery. The sounds of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival will fill the remaining monastery for the first time in the summer of 2007. A picturesque venue on the east-coast of Schleswig-Holstein - for sounds that enchant.
This venue is not equipped with wheelchair access.
