Louisenlund
The buildings of Louisenlund boarding school are located alongside the so-called »Große Breite« (massive breadth) of the Schlei (sea inlet), in the middle of the scenic countryside of Schleswig-Holstein. Louisenlund was founded in 1949 as a state-recognized school under independent sponsorship. With more than 350 students, it is now among the largest boarding schools in Germany. Louisenlund Castle was built between 1772 and 1776 as a birthday present from Landgrave Carl von Hessen to his wife Louise, after whom the estate is named. In 1831 the possession of Louisenlund was passed over to the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg who then gave the castle its current form. The clear forms of the estate and the extensive English park combine to integrate nature with architecture, making the premises somewhere between traditional and modern. This atmosphere occurs in the events of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival as well, especially during the SHMF evening series »Text and Music«.
