The Museum der Arbeit (Labor Museum) is located in a former production center of the New-York Hamburger Gummi-Waaren Compagnie in Barmek. It is situated in one of the oldest existing factory centers in Hamburg, which has been expanded upon continually since its initial construction in 1871. In 1992, the still intact factory building was transformed into a museum complex. Further exhibit and event spaces and even a public library were added until 2006. With its exhibits, the museum attempts to portray how people’s lives and work have changed over the past 150 years. For this reason, the museum’s courtyard is the perfect setting for an open-air concert of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival; as cultural events have now become an integral part of many people’s lives.
