No other building dominates Sonderburg harbor (in Danish Sønderborg) more than the Sonderburg Castle. The powerful architecture, stemming from the 12th century, once served the protection of the common port-city on the island Als, which is about 40 kilometers northeast of Flensburg and 30 kilometers southeast of Apenrade, located on Flensburg Fjord. Today the castle is among the most important museums in Northern Schleswig and is one of the oldest secular buildings in the entire region. The knight’s hall of the castle gives the concerts of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival an impressive atmosphere. Schloss Sonderburg DK 6400 Sonderburg |
