Works by Sauli, Bach, Bloch, Molly Joyce (première) and others

Just a few years ago, hardly a concert organizer would have dared to present a mandolin solo evening. The fact that this is even possible today is thanks in large part to one musician: Avi Avital. In the past few years, the highly sympathetic Israeli has become a sort of ambassador of the mandolin and has made the old instrument come back to life after it had had been forgotten for the past two centuries. He never ceases to explore his own instrument, to explore its possibilities. This delight in exploration is also reflected in his solo program, the great frame of which is Bach's ingenious D minor partita for violin solo, in an impressive mandolin arangement. Moreover, what is still to be extracted from the little plucked instrument is shown by other, very different works, including a self-composition called “Kedma” (eastward), which reverberates back to the Orient and to its homeland.
