Maurice Ravel:
Daphnis et Chloé. Suite no.2
Piano Concerto in G
César Franck:
Symphony in D minor

Tears flowed down her cheek when she first played the slow movement from Ravel's G major concerto, said Marguerite Long, the pianist who performed the world premiere, in an interview in 1965. In fact, this movement is of a bewitching, almost supernatural beauty that hardly leaves one unaffected. The late-antique story of the children, Daphnis and Chloé, also pulls on the heartstrings as they fall in love with each other in their youth, lose one another, and ultimately find their greatest happiness. With the entire color palette of nature used, from the light of the southern sun to the variously colored moods of the two lovers, Ravel truly captivates audiences with his choreographic symphony, "Daphnis et Chloé." Shortly after finishing the complete ballet music – which the SHMF will present on August 14th with its own two ensembles under the direction of Christoph Eschenbach in the Elbphilharmonie - Ravel produced the two suites, the second of which to be performed today with its enthusiastic and ecstatic finale.
