Stathis Karapanos wins the Leonard Bernstein Award 2020!
The 23-year-old Greek is the first flutist to be honored. As the founder of the coveted award, the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe is sending out a clear signal in the area of talent promotion. SHMF director and jury member Dr. Christian Kuhnt explains the decision as follows: "Stathis Karapanos is not only a technically brilliant flutist, but he also has the talent, the expressiveness and the emotionality that is needed to intuitively feel music and to convey it to the audience with a great charisma. With him we also honour a young European whose career began in Greece and led him via Bulgaria to Germany and France. Once again, it shows that music does not know any borders and has a unifying energy – just like Leonard Bernstein, the eponym of the award and co-founder of the SHMF, exemplified.
Stathis Karapanos was born in Athens in 1996 as the son of a ballet dancer and a banker. At the age of six he was a student at the National Conservatory in Athens and received his first flute lessons. At 13 he was accepted at the National School of Music of Sofia "NMU Lyubomir Pipkov" and began his studies. Master classes and first performances as soloist with professional orchestras followed. In 2012 Karapanos began his studies at the Karlsruhe University of Music and graduated with distinction in 2018. Karapanos gave up his position as principal flutist of the Athens State Symphony Orchestra, which he was offered in 2017, in 2018 to continue his studies with Philippe Bernold at the Conservatoire de Paris.
