The Kieler Yacht Club (KYC), with around 1,400 members, is one of the largest and most traditional sailing clubs in Germany. Founded in 1887, it was initially only open to members of the Imperial Navy and even counted Emperor Wilhelm II among its honorary members. For the 1972 Olympics, the KYC acquired the grounds of the Scharstein shipyard in Strande to establish two boat halls and a storage area for boats. One of these halls, which still houses sailing boats during the winter, is used in the summer as a venue for the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.
