The foundation stone of the Dom (cathedral) in Schleswig was laid in 1134 and the construction process lasted until around the year 1200. From then on the cathedral was expanded in the style of the various epochs of its time. The construction of the late Gothic Hallenkirche, for example, began as early as 1200 but was not completed until the 16th century. The 112 meter high Gothic church tower is considered a landmark of the city Schleswig. The inside of the cathedral is the home to such invaluable objects as the “Brüggemann Altar” by the carver Hans Brüggemann, the cloister “Schwahl” with its restored fresco from the period of edification, and the bronze baptismal font from 1480. The Schleswig Cathedral has been a popular venue of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival for a few years now. Appreciated by artist and audience alike, the cathedral has hosted concerts by the Amsterdam Bach Soloists and the King’s Singers.
