St. Laurentiuskirche

The Tönninger town church, built of bricks, bears the name of Saint Laurentius. Already by 1186, a place of worship was built on the site of today's church. The church interior is dominated by the powerful ceiling painting by the Hamburg painter Barthold Conrath from 1704. Other important works of art are the eight-meter-high painted altar, which is attributed to Marten van Achten, and the baptismal font made of alabaster and marble. Above the rood screen from 1635, which separates the nave from the choir, hangs a late Gothic triumphal crucifix group created around 1500. As a special feature, the church has two organs. On the rood screen the smaller choir organ with eight stops, whose case dates back to 1739, and the large main organ with 41 stops, which was built in 1978 using old case parts by Hinrich Otto Paschen.
