St. Nikolai

The main church of St. Nikolai looks back on an eventful history - from its beginnings in Neustadt to its current location at Klosterstern in Hamburg-Harvestehude. The church was rebuilt there after the destruction of the old St. Nikolai church on Hopfenmarkt during the Second World War. The modern new building, designed by the architects Gerhard and Dieter Langmaack, was consecrated in 1962. The cantilevered construction of the nave is particularly impressive and offers an unobstructed view of the chancel with the famous mosaic »Ecce homines« by Oskar Kokoschka. This wide-sweeping church space creates wonderfully soft acoustics, which come into their own during musical performances in the church.
