Traditional madrigals, romantic songs of the last five centuries,
as well as a selection of contemporary jazz and pop arrangements
“VOCES8” has taken the hearts of a cappella fans by storm. The eight Brits perform a wide repertoire ranging from the Renaissance, classical and romantic vocal works to Nat “King” Cole, Simon & Garfunkel, and contemporary pop music. In addition to their grandiose voices, their unique arrangements are also part of their phenomenal success. A few years ago, the group established the “VOCES8 Centre” in the former church of St Anne and St Agnes in London, a new home for their projects involving young artists and other multifaceted musical activities. From the heart of London, VOCES8 will visit SHMF this summer to celebrate their 15th anniversary. The ensemble was inspired for their current program “After Silence” by the essay of the same name by the British writer Aldous Huxley, where it says: “After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” And so, extremely carefully, the group assembles choral works which – detached from their original contexts – are distinguished by an inexhaustible capacity to express the inexpressible.
