Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115 and The Hungarian Dances, Waltzes and Melodies

Andreas Ottensamer comes from one of the most important Austrian musical families ever: His father and brother are stars of the Vienna Philharmonic, and he himself is principal clarinetist with the Berlin Philharmonic and the first clarinetist ever to sign an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. Under the motto “The Hungarian Connection”, Ottensamer now embarks on a quest together with the renowned Kelemen Quartet and a highly virtuosic Gypsy Banda. Half Hungarian himself, he explores the stylistics and customs of Johannes Brahms in his traditional Hungarian songs and dances and combines them with an interpretation of his magnificent Clarinet Quintet, Op. 115. Here, the attention to detail of a classical chamber music group meets the loose and freely expressive style of a Hungarian restaurant band – the sequence ranges from the cozy warmth of Brahms’ waltzes to the decidedly exotic sound of the Transylvanian medley. Brahms, who had no inhibitions about mixing folk music with high art, would surely have given his blessing.
After the concert, a passenger ship will sail back to Dagebüll.
