Carmina Burana

To mark the 75th birthday of Justus Frantz, the SHMF is hosting a large concert for the festival founder. At the special request of the former SHMF director, Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" will be on the programme alongside Rossini's effective "Wilhelm Tell" overture and Mozart's most famous piano concerto. As is well known, the texts of this spectacular work date from the 13th century, were rediscovered in 1803 in Benediktbeuern Monastery and published in 1847 as "Carmina Burana - Lieder aus Benediktbeuern". Carl Orff finally selected 24 drinking and love songs for his Opus magnum. In his own words, what had so inflamed Orff about this manuscript was the stirring rhythm, the pictorial quality of these poems and, last but not least, the vocally rich musicality and unique scarcity of the Latin language. First performed in 1937, the "Carmina Burana" quickly became one of the most popular works of the 20th century.
