Johann Sebastian Bach:
Sonatas and partitas for violin solo BWV1001-1006

Only once in the more than 30-year history of the SHMF has a violinist ventured to play Bach’s six sonatas and partitas in one single evening: It was Christian Tetzlaff, and in a year when – on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Bach’s death – the Thuringian master was also the focus of the festival. Almost 20 years later, it is again this native of Hamburg who is living up to the challenge. The demand for concentration, intellectual penetration, and creative power is immense in this bold, singular cycle of works for violin without any accompaniment. This not only applies to the performer, but also to the audience, for whomever takes part in this intense, extremely intimate evening will be richly rewarded with breathtakingly ingenious music that deeply touches the human soul.
