Christoph Eschenbach, conductor
Piano concerto No. 1 a minor, Op. 7
Symphony No. 4 e minor, Op. 98
The coveted Leonard Bernstein Award, named after one of the SHMF’s founding fathers, will be presented this year to the British pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason. The 24-year-old thus follows in the footsteps of important prize winners like Lang Lang and Martin Grubinger. Her deep reverence for Clara Schumann manifests itself in her hugely successful debut album “Romance,” released in 2019, which is entirely dedicated to the music of her great idol – another of her idols, incidentally, is US pop artist Beyoncé. “We have nicknamed her Clara,” her mother reveals, “because she seemed to know everything about her.” By “we,” she also refers to Isata’s six younger siblings, all of whom play music at the highest level, preferably together. More often, however, the young soloist has to part ways with them, for her concert activities now take her to the great houses of the world like New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Tonhalle in Zurich.
The Leonard Bernstein Award, sponsored by the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, will be awarded during the concert to Isata Kanneh-Mason.
