Sinfonie Nr. 5 op. 50

Versatility is one fitting label that international critics use to describe the Danish violinist Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider on the basis of his successes as a violinist, conductor, and chamber musician; fearlessness is the other. In 2020, the SHMF is on the agenda of the internationally celebrated virtuoso for the first time: Together with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and under the baton of Fabio Luisi, Szeps-Znaider will be placing Danish and German Romanticism in musical relation to each other over the course of two evenings. At his SHMF debut in Hamburg, he will perform Nielsen’s violin concerto, which won him victory at the renowned Carl Nielsen International Competition at the age of 17. The program will also feature Brahms’ last symphony, one of the Hamburg composer’s most artistic compositions. On the second evening in Flensburg, the composers will swap genres: For Brahms’ violin concerto, which was considered unplayable at the time of its composition, Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider will blend in virtuosically with the warm sound of the large orchestra, followed by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra expressing its special sense of Danish music with Nielsen’s Fifth Symphony.
