Esther Ofarim – Is It Really Me!

She is only 5 feet tall and would often prefer to make herself invisible, but when she is on stage, she suddenly fills the room and becomes a great performer. Esther Ofarim, who celebrates her 80th birthday this year, still has that intense, warm, and soulful voice that made her world famous in the 1960s as a duo with Abi Ofarim. After parting ways with Abi and retreating into the private sphere, her name appeared only occasionally in public, performing concerts almost exclusively in Israel. But then the Hamburger Kammerspiele asked her if she would like to perform a recital – the starting point for a revamp to her career. That was in 1998, and the public has been praising her again ever since. The small, delicate, and incredibly modest woman with the dark doe eyes, however, is almost uncomfortable with this. She lives completely in her art, where she is completely herself. This summer, Esther Ofarim will perform tunes and chansons ranging from John Lennon and Paul McCartney to Kurt Weil, Bertolt Brecht, and traditional Israeli songs.
