Ludwig van Beethoven:
Sinfonie Nr. 9 d-Moll op. 125
Tan Dun:
»The Nine-Project«

Tan Dun is regarded as one of the most impressive and influential composers of our time – a crosser of borders who combines classical with modern elements in his music and creates a connection between East and West. His new work “The Nine-Project,” inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, celebrates its world premiere only three days before the concert in Lübeck. The musical setting of the “nine songs” of shamanic origin is a developing dialog between the Chinese poet Qu Yuan and Friedrich Schiller as well as between Tan Dun himself and Beethoven about “the beauty of man, the beauty of the spirit, and the beauty of the earth,” according to Tan Dun. He will then conduct the National Youth Orchestra of Germany and the World Youth Choir in a monumental performance of Beethoven’s globe-spanning Symphony No. 9. The scoring of the “Ode to Joy” changed the musical world forever and is still regarded today as an anthem for humanistic values. The young musicians, who consider themselves to be global ambassadors for music, will create an experience that musically expresses their intercultural understanding. An absolute highlight of Beethoven’s anniversary year!
