“Piano art in perfect clarity – it can all be played differently, but hardly more grandiose, more differentiated in terms of touch, more motorically zigzagged,” said the newspaper Kieler Nachrichten full of admiration about the piano recital of the Russian world-class pianist Grigory Sokolov at the SHMF last summer. The virtuoso, who is repeatedly described as a “magician of sound,” does not give interviews, because Sokolov, who won the legendary Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition as a 16-year-old, wants to let the music speak directly for itself, far away from any sense of stardom. CD recordings are also extremely rare, so whoever wishes to experience the art of Grigory Sokolov must go to the concert hall. The finely tuned performance creates unrepeatable moments – like only very few artists, he succeeds in directing the audience’s attention entirely to the uniqueness of the live experience with his restrained and at the same time gripping piano playing style. For his 21st concert at the SHMF, the pianist returns to Kiel and will interpret, among other works, Robert Schumann’s highly virtuosic cycle “Kreisleriana” in the atmospheric ambiance of the Petruskirche in Kiel. The piece is considered the key work of the Romantic piano literature par excellence.
