“The man is a genius” – with these words, a furiously raving Martha Argerich resigned her seat on the jury at the Warsaw Chopin Competition in 1980. Ivo Pogorelich, whose daring play thrilled her, had already been eliminated after the third round. Yet, the Croatian pianist, 22 years old at the time, became famous through a prize he did not win. What followed were triumphant debuts around the world and an unprecedented artistic career. Ivo Pogorelich has never allowed himself to be swayed. He has trusted in himself completely and with his unconventional, unadjusted, and sometimes provocative playing, in the best sense of the word, he has advanced to become the piano icon of the last decades. Occasionally, it became quieter around the idolized piano dandy, and years of seclusion followed. In 2019, Pogorelich then gave an acclaimed concert at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie as part of the SHMF, which die WELT summed up: “It’s likely that no one at the moment plays the epicurean glow of the stars more seductively, intoxicatingly, or shamelessly.” The urgency that gets under the skin and reveals the great musician will be experienced again this summer at the Elbphilharmonie.
