Jan Lisiecki, Klavier
Chamber Orchestra of Europe
Ludwig van Beethoven:
Klavierkonzert Nr. 1 C-Dur op. 15
Klavierkonzert Nr. 2 B-Dur op. 19
Klavierkonzert Nr. 3 c-Moll op. 37
“A pianist who gives meaning to every note” is how the New York Times recently described Jan Lisiecki. For his seventh guest appearance at the festival, the much sought-after young star has selected Ludwig van Beethoven’s complete piano concertos. The demanding works of Beethoven, who himself earned a large part of his living as a brilliant pianist, have played a decisive role in Jan Lisiecki’s career: Piano Concerto No. 4 brought him international renown in 2013, as did his Beethoven cycle in 2018 with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, when he stood in for Murray Perahia. For the Canadian, it is only in the comprehensive arc of tension that the five piano concertos unfold a new perspective on the composer’s genius: “Beethoven certainly did not conceive of these works as a coherent whole. Nevertheless, they belong together because they present an incredibly differentiated picture of Beethoven, beginning with the first two concertos, which still reveal Mozart’s legacy, through the very different and visionary works of numbers three and four, to the majestic E flat major concerto, which may well be understood as the crowning glory of the genre.” The Chamber Orchestra of Europe, which Lisiecki will conduct from the grand piano, will certainly make the performance of this timeless cycle on two evenings an impressive experience in Beethoven’s anniversary year.
