Kissin plays Liszt
Evgeny Kissin, Piano
Sylvain Cambreling, Conductor
Johann Sebastian Bach:
Fuga (Ricercata) from »Musikalischen Opfer« for orchestra by Anton Webern
Piano Concerto no.1 in E-flat major
Symphony no.4 in E-flat major "Romantische"
The first pieces that little Evgeny Kissin tried to play on the piano came from Chopin and Liszt. Both composers, who were at the same time outstanding piano virtuosos, are still an important part of his repertoire today. For Liszt’s 200th birthday in 2011, Kissin performed numerous piano concerts that purely featured Liszt. So far, however, two crucial works have been missing from his repertoire: Liszt's piano concertos. Recently, however, he has been intensively studying both of them behind the scenes and is now playing them in concert since last season. The more famous of the two is that in E flat major, which Kissin has chosen for his performance with the Symphoniker Hamburg under Sylvain Cambreling. Both Liszt's early years of success and his later symphonic style can be found in the concerto, in which soloist and orchestra are in close dialogue.
