Clara and Robert Schumann:
12 poems from "Liebesfrühling" op.37
Robert Schumann:
Myrthen op.25

“On the eve of our wedding party [September 11, 1840], my Robert gave me yet another beautiful wedding gift, ‘Myrten’ – I was quite moved!” writes Clara in her journal. Robert had presented her with a beautiful special edition with gold print and elaborate decoration on the edges with the dedication “To my beloved Klara on the eve of our wedding, from her Robert.” “You my soul, you my heart” are once again the opening lines of the first song – a declaration of love that could not be better expressed. A few months later, Schumann contemplated the idea of composing a song cycle together with Clara. In January 1841, he wrote: “The idea of publishing a songbook with Kl.[ara] inspired me to work. From Monday to Monday the 11th, I completed nine songs taken from Rückert’s “Liebesfrühling”.” Later, Clara contributed three songs that she gave to Robert as a gift on June 8, 1841 for his 31st birthday. Both cycles and documents of a great love can be heard this evening.
