Martin Grubinger always lets the SHMF audience share in his irrepressible joy of playing and exceptionally virtuoso program formats. This year, the multipercussionist will show his energetic and precise talents again when he interprets the piece Sieidi by the Finnish composer Kalevi Aho. Grubinger was immediately thrilled with the 2010 drum concert, named after a sacred site in Lapland: “A fantastic work!” Numerous complex time signatures and time changes require the full concentration of the orchestra and soloist. The latter runs laps around all kinds of percussion instruments from across the world: African djembé, Arab darabuka, North American tom-toms, Guatemalan marimba, East Asian woodblocks, the vibraphone, and back again. The almost 40-minute piece is a journey through extremes, from stirring to soothing – or as Grubinger himself says: “There’s a lot going on here!”
