Johannes Brahms’ enchanting Violin Concerto undoubtedly represents one of the most radiant pillars of this year’s composer retrospective. Not only is it arguably one of the most important masterpieces in the composer’s œuvre, but it is also one of the most important compositions of this genre ever. The exceptional violinist Midori, whose playing emotes intimacy, maturity and beauty, performs the highly demanding solo. Far removed from extravagant ideas, airs and graces are alien to her – full of humility before the matter at hand, she places her person completely in the background. Midori is accompanied by the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. As with other solo concertos by Brahms, the orchestra is not just a decorative accessory, but a partner at eye level. Conducted by Tarmo Peltokoski, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen concludes the concert with the three-movement 5th Symphony by Jean Sibelius. The massive work premiered on December 8, 1915 – the Finnish composer’s 50th birthday – and made him a celebrated folk hero.
