Nordic String Quartet
Marthe Husum, Viola
Streichquartett Nr. 1
»Intimate Miniatures« op. 20
Streichquartett d-Moll op. 56 »Voces Intimae«
“An extraordinarily fresh and pleasant String Quintet in G major by the still very young composer Carl Nielsen testified to a healthy, fertile talent for instrumental composition,” wrote a newspaper after the premiere of Nielsen’s string quintet from 1888. Another newspaper wrote: “On the whole, this work makes a good impression thanks to an appealing melody, a rounded form, and extraordinary inventiveness in terms of harmony.” At SHMF the Nordic String Quartet will perform Nielsen’s early work together with Marthe Husum, a former member of the festival orchestra. The Scandinavian quartet has a special preference for Nordic composers; therefore, none of their programs are complete without Nordic works. In addition to world-famous composers such as Jean Sibelius, they also make the voices of the younger generation heard with works by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen from Denmark and Lars-Erik Larsson from Sweden.
