Hélène Grimaud, piano
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester
Pablo Heras-Casado, conductor
Symphony No. 6 in C major, D 589
Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15
“You feel like you’re walking through the moving drama of life itself. When I heard the concerto for the first time, I knew I could no longer live without it,” enthuses Hélène Grimaud about Johannes Brahms’ first piano concerto. As existential as the work is for the French pianist, so completely does she put her heart into the interpretation of the piano part. Grimaud is particularly fond of one aspect of Brahms’ composition: She feels like she is part of the orchestra. For unlike most solo concertos which typically feature the piano part, a completely natural fusion of orchestra and solo instrument in this case lends the work its symphonic character. The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado, will also perform Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 6. Composed for a Viennese “amateur orchestra,” Schubert’s own style runs throughout with colorful harmonies and song-like melodies.
