Sergei Babayan, Piano
Johann Sebastian Bach:
Goldberg Variations BWV988
as well as works by Chopin, Liszt and others
“This Mozart was extraordinary, an absolute discovery – because he played it. It was the best Mozart I’ve ever done with a pianist,” Martha Argerich said a few years ago about the duet with her pianist colleague and musician friend Sergei Babayan, adding: “It was a piece of alchemy.” In 2018, the two presented their first collaborative album with Deutsche Grammophon, with works by Prokofiev. Babayan, born in 1961 in Armenia, educated at the Moscow Conservatory, and living in the United States since the fall of the Iron Curtain, is at least as famous in the U.S. as his former student Daniil Trifonov is in Europe. However, Babayan is no longer an insider tip here, neither. Especially with his Bach performances, he caused a sensation on the “Old Continent”. With Bach’s pianistic summit work, the Goldberg Variations, he is now also a guest at the SHMF for the first time.
