Valentin Silvestrov:
"Silent Songs"

“I have a special relationship with the ‘Silent Songs’ of Valentin Silvestrov. I’ve known Valentin for a very long time, and when I first heard these songs, I immediately fell in love with the music. I have never performed it before, so this concert together with the great singer Measha Brueggergosman – a vocal force of nature – will be an exciting premiere that I am incredibly looking forward to,” says the French pianist and this year’s SHMF portrait artist Hélène Grimaud. The Kiev composer Valentin Silvestrov wrote his four-part vocal cycle “Silent Songs” in 1974-77 based on verses by classical poets. Musically, it echoes Schubertian lyricism and English folk music. Most clearly, however, the songs follow the great tradition of Russian romance. The careful selection of texts is testament to Silvestrov’s deep poetic sensibility. “I felt the need to submit to the poetry, to wait for the poem to sing itself,” Silvestrov said.
