Franz Schubert’s youth symphonies are often classified as “finger exercises,” and even the composer himself was extremely hesitant to present his first six symphonies to the public. Yet even if the Viennese master was influenced early on by role models like Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven, his early symphonies bear witness to his unique tone and artistic development, which ultimately led him to the great C major symphony. In its interpretation of Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under the artistic direction of the Estonian star conductor Paavo Järvi illuminates Schubert’s position in the transition from the classical to the romantic era. Beyond conventional performances, the orchestra members bring out the new as well as the original and promise a rousing concert experience with their irrepressible energy, dedication, and extraordinary sound. Beethoven’s overtures to Coriolan and The Creatures of Prometheus intensify this symphonic departure.
