Bach and Piazzolla
Astor Piazzolla’s well-known tango La muerte del ángel begins with a fugue. And it is by no means the only fugue or fugal passage found in the works of the Argentinian. Piazzolla loved Bach. While living in New York with his parents, he heard a piece through an open window that immediately electrified him. Later he learned that it was a work of Bach. And the most popular single number from his tango opera María de Buenos Aires is also a veritable fugue and is even named after the baroque art form: “Fuga y misterio”. What seems strange at first – to interweave Bach and Piazzolla – eventually makes perfect sense. Or even more: it is actually very exciting. Because that which fascinates Piazzolla so much about Bach and is reflected in his works becomes clear the more the listener hears Bach. And what kind of interpreters could be better for such a program than the three fantastic “classical” musicians Isabelle van Keulen, Ulrike Payer, and Rüdiger Ludwig, who are joined by bandoneonist Christian Gerber as a proven tango specialist?
