Leoš Janáček:

Maurice Ravel:
Sonata for violin and piano in G major

Allegretto - Blues - Perpetuum mobile - this is already a striking sequence of movements for a work with the simple title of “Sonata.” But like many other composers of his generation, Ravel also had a certain jazz fever. No wonder, as more and more black musicians came to Paris in the 1920s, and the city on the Seine became one of the European centers of jazz and blues. Ravel was a frequent guest in the Parisian artists' clubs, and the striking “grinding” section right at the beginning of the second movement of his sonata may well have been borrowed from the blues. Ravel's masterpiece and three other sonatas for violin and piano will now take center stage with two very talented “northern lights”: the native of Hamburg, Christian Tetzlaff, and the Norwegian master pianist, Leif Ove Andsnes.
