Immanuelkirche

The Immanuelkirche in Wedel is the oldest church in the town. A document attests to the existence of the former village church as early as 1314. During the Second World War, it was completely destroyed by a bombing raid on March 3, 1943, which also destroyed the high tower. The interior was initially renovated in a makeshift manner and finally modernized in 1974/75, including a large area in the chancel for choir and orchestra. In 2009, the tower was raised again to 48 m. The intense blue tones in the church interior were restored for the 50th anniversary in 2024/25. The poet Johann Rist worked here from 1635-1667. The text for the chorale »Brich an, Du schönes Morgenlicht« from Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio was written by him.
