In September 2006, Kiel's traditional cinema »Metro« in Holtenauer Straße was reopened as »metro-Kino im Schloßhof« after a complete refurbishment, retaining the old cinema charm of 1939 and equipping it with state-of-the-art technology. The cinema has three auditoriums, a cinema café with 60 seats and a sunny outdoor area. In addition to exquisite wines, homemade cakes and café specialities, a variety of breakfasts are served daily. The weekly changing programme at metro-Kino im Schloßhof focuses on family-friendly mainstream and children's films as well as arthouse films for an adult audience. In addition to the film programme, part of the concept is to turn the cinema into a cultural event centre in the north of Kiel. Readings, comedy and cabaret programmes as well as unplugged concerts therefore take place at regular intervals on the stage of the large auditorium.
