The St. Marienkirche was built between 1827 and 1832, modeled after the plans drawn up by Denmark’s master-builder Christian Frederik Hansen. The structure exhibits a perfect example of a protestant sermon-church and is considered among the most significant representations of Northern Classicism in the country. The bright, festive inside has retained some of the furnishings from the old Gothic Marienkirche.
