The city church in which concerts of the SHMF will take place in historic ambiance is located on the edge of the large market place in Glückstadt, on the banks of the river Elbe. This small church in late Gothic style is best known for its uniquely formed Baroque tower, adorned with a royal crown and the goddess of luck, Fortuna, from which the city itself gets its name. The church was built between 1618 and 1623, and was the first post-reformation church to be constructed in Schleswig-Holstein. Confusion during this time is reflected in the architecture of the church. As people were unsure how Lutheran churches should be distinguished from Catholic churches, the church is laid out like a Catholic church, but has an Evangelical style pulpit, which is located and positioned in a way that accents the reading of the word of God.
