Christopher Park, Piano
Variations about a Nocturne by Chopin
Concert sans Orchestre op.14
Faschingsschwank aus Wien op.26
“Hats off, gentlemen, a genius!” read Robert Schumann's famous statement about the young Chopin in “Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung” in 1831. The two composers of the same age would not meet until September 28, 1835, however, namely in the home of Friedrich Wieck in Leipzig, where Chopin also heard the 16-year-old Clara Wieck play the piano. It must not have been too long after their encounter that Schumann composed "Variations on a Nocturne by Chopin," which did not appear in print until 1992 and, therefore, has not been frequently performed in concert halls. Christopher Park, who received the 2014 SHMF Leonard Bernstein Award, sponsored by Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, and bravely filled in for Tzimon Barto in summer 2017 with the Festival Orchestra at the Elbphilharmonie, absolutely sought to perform the work. He combines it with other works from Schumann’s highly productive creative phase, which was characterized by the grueling struggle for his future bride Clara.
