Johann Sebastian Bach:
Choir (Ciaccona) »Meine Tage in dem Leide« aus der Cantata »Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich« BWV150
Johannes Brahms:
Violin Concerto in D major op.77
Symphony no.4 in E-flat minor op.98

Johannes Brahms was a great admirer and connoisseur of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. The Bach Gesellschaft (Bach Society) was founded in Leipzig in 1850 with the aim of publishing Bach’s complete body of works in a single edition. Of course, Brahms was one of the subscribers. The fact that a bass theme in the final chorus of Bach’s cantata “Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich” (For Thee, O Lord, I long) caught his attention and tempted him to write a symphony piece about it shows just how carefully he studied Bach's work. The result of this exploration was the final movement, the famous Passacaglia, from Brahms’ Symphony No. 4. It is one of Brahms’ most popular works and is performed frequently. The SHMF and the two large ensembles of the NDR – orchestra and choir – now offer their audience the rare opportunity to hear Bach's choir with the ciaccona theme before Brahms's symphonic masterpiece. The theme then reappears in a slightly different form in the symphony.
