Johann Sebastian Bach:
Harpsichord Concerto in D minor BWV1052
as well as works by Haydn, Mozart, Bartók and Britten

This story is unusual for a nine-year-old boy born in Tehran who came to the US as a toddler: he heard a cassette recording of Karl Richter and the Munich Bach Orchestra playing Bach’s D minor harpsichord concerto, and that was that. A year later, little Mahan dragged his father to a concert to finally witness a harpsichord firsthand. Today, Mahan Esfahani is a celebrity on the harpsichord – he performed an evening concert as a soloist and as a duo with Avi Avital at the 2017 SHMF. In 2019, he will guest star with one of the most traditional chamber orchestras ever: The Academy of St Martin in the Fields – and with the work that once triggered his revival experience: Bach’s Concerto in D minor. Only about 20 to 30 years younger is Haydn’s double concerto for the unusual pairing of solo violin and solo harpsichord. In addition to Mahan Esfahani, Tomo Keller from Stuttgart, who has been the Leader of the Academy of the British orchestra since 2015, will join in.
