Calefax Reed Quintet
as well as works by Rameau, Mendelssohn, Liszt and others
The Calefax Reed Quintet performs regularly at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, where it is announced – on its home turf – as Calefax Rietkwintet. Speakers of Dutch will understand the origin of the unusual name of the ensemble quicker than English speakers, since the word “Riet” (reed) is closer to the point. The Calefax Reed Quintet is not an ordinary wind quintet with flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and horn, but a pipe quintet which uses only reed instruments – in this case, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, bass clarinet, and bassoon. The quintet, which emerged from a school ensemble at Amsterdam's Barlaeus upper secondary school and is named after an old metal construction company once based in Amsterdam's district of Bickerseiland, has been inspiring its audiences with refined arrangements and sophisticated programs for more than 30 years. In their very first SHMF guest performance, the five Dutchmen will dedicate themselves to the subject of “Schumann and Nature,” and, of course, one work will surely not lack: Schumann's highly poetic "Forest Scenes".
