For its Krusenkoppel park, the city of Kiel has Heinrich Kruse from the island of Fehmarn to thank. He founded the stately hotel with its sprawling grounds in the area of Kiel, Düsternbrook in 1856. He donated the entire estate to the city of Kiel upon his death, giving the citizens of Kiel an opulent open-air theater in 1950. After many changes, leases and renovations until 1993, the event location transformed into the second largest open-air stage in Schleswig-Holstein with over 2,200 seats.
